Initially created for a special issue of Headmaster Magazine, the Lunoryza project emerged out of a desire to imagine a new world alongside a guiding “queer zodiac”.

Lunoryza was created after the rebirth of the New Moon. The Moon was divided into 7 phases represented by the signs No Hoa, Tantam, Datura, Kiriya, Kasundo, Ziji and Saeroun to create an ongoing lunar cycle.

During the Ro Na Dynasty, Emperor Heo was disgusted by the thought of any dissidence from his people. He often used fear to control his empire, so he ordered his royal guard, the Dwae Ji, to ambush the Moon Goddess and bring darkness to the world. After being lured down from the moon, she saw a lifeless body and immediately flew toward it. When the Moon Goddess discovered her beloved rabbit companion, a wave of red light bled across the surface of the moon as she screamed in rage. Before she even noticed, her spirit was struck by seven arrows, and suddenly darkness enveloped the world. The Dwae Jicaptured the Moon Goddess and brought her to Emperor Heo. As she was unable to return to the heavens and regain her strength, a glowing red ring formed in the absence of the moon. This celestial imbalance led to the Eternal Eclipse, an era of sunless days and moonless nights. Eventually, her fractured spirit separated into seven fragments that scattered across the land, allowing for the birth of a new Moon.

Goddex of Impermanence
No Hoa: Shay Dior

Celebrated across the land as a spiritual divinity, Shay Dior was a wandering shaman who came to the aid of communities by alleviating grief, suffering, and even illnesses. These treatments were performed by leaving the physical body and entering the spirit realm. Acting as a bridge, Shay directed spiritual and healing energy back to the living; however, when performing these healings, their vacant body was vulnerable. During a moonless night, Shay spent too much time outside their body looking for the answer to immortality, which led to their downfall. The spirit of the Luna Moth, also known as Actias, travelled into Shay’s body causing it to age at an unfathomable rate. As long as Actias remained inside, they could only watch in horror as the effects of time rapidly took place. That was, until their body was encased by mysterious red silks. While exiled as a spirit, they bore witness to the suffering of countless souls also refusing to move on. When they eventually relinquished all attachments to their previous self, their essence was absorbed into the cocoon. It wasn’t until the Eternal Eclipse ended that the Luna Moth reemerged with its wings spread and took flight, unraveling the cocoon beneath, and revealing an evolved form of Shay Dior.

Goddess of Diligence
Tantam: Jas Minh

Raised by a dysfunctional family, Jas Minh was often held to unrealistic standards and suffered from emotional and psychological abuse. Only knowing conditional love, she lacked any self-worth and developed an incessant guilt. Haunted by shame, Jas Minh needed to be free from her family and the trauma they inflicted. During the chaos of the Eternal Eclipse, she fled into the night searching for guidance. Jas Minh was determined to forge a new life and kept running to ignore any self-doubt. When the return of light ended the eclipse, she found herself in a lifeless paddy field. It was here that Jas Minh saw a single plant glowing in the night and curiosity drew her touch. The grain of rice fell and transformed into a small glowing spirit in her palm. The spirit asked her to farm the paddy field back to life and restore the land. Eventually, Jas Minh reluctantly agreed. Over time, the spirit guided her through the work needed to revive the crops, showering her with encouragement and appreciation as plant life returned to the field. Complete resurgence was near but then they noticed some plants had failed to grow. Memories flooded Jas Minh's mind and shattered her with panic and shame, until her eyes landed on the warm glow of the spirit. The confidence she had been cultivating returned to dispel her doubts, and for the first time in her life, Jas Minh truly felt a sense of self-worth. Recognizing her unlocked potential, the spirit faded to imbed it's lunar energy within Jas Minh.

Goddess of Euphoria
Datura: Maiden China

Maiden China was a powerful witch who’s soul was born into the wrong body, and she desperately desired the transcendence of her mind, and spirit, above all things. She grew exhausted of the dysphoria around her mortal cage, so she dedicated her life to the process of transitioning, for herself and others like her. Her research led her to Moon Valley, where the Dwae Ji Guard ambushed the Moon Goddess, and there she discovered a field of a peculiar flower, Datura, that bloomed only at night and twinkled delicately in the darkness. Datura, she discovered, is a toxic plant that possesses potent psychoactive and transmogrifying powers. With these, Maiden China developed an elixir that could transform her body to reflect her innermost self. As her body began to align with her heart and mind, she felt a surge of power and her skin began dazzling with a brilliant sparkle. Impatient with the slow distillation process, she began consuming the flower in its raw form. Her rapid consumption of datura caused toxins to secrete from her skin, crystallizing her body in a state caught between ecstasy and excruciating pain. Draining any remaining magic she could muster, she thrust herself skyward. Maiden China now hangs in the heavens as the patron saint of transgender souls, glimmering amongst the stars, trapped for all eternity.

Ploy Pailin

Dol of Siam was born with Kinnaree features, a mythical being that is half human, half bird. She was a free-spirited and soft-spoken princess devoted to saying and doing the “right” thing. Although she loved her beautiful Kinnaree wings, her parents prioritized their public image and forced her to conceal them. The love for herself and compassion for others was replaced by a growing resentment around her obligations as a princess. She maintained her composure with her family and the public, but when her demand for acceptance and respect was not met, vengence slowly spread through her soul. One night, Dol freed her wings and attacked the innocent with dark magic, bringing chaos to the world. Blinded by rage, her careless actions allowed her to get caught and the public crucified her. As her morality began to resurface, the weight of her rampage fractured her house of glass and she disintegrated into nothingness. As she tried to piece her physical being back together, her soul sought shelter in stillness. She repented for her sins by giving up her wings and reconnected with her thoughts and intentions. Lost for decades watching the world, Dol ruminated within herself, dismantling her understandings to rebuild her views and values of mindfulness. When the world was shrouded by the dark, she concentrated her efforts into finding the noble paths and reigniting the light. When the full moon returned to the skies, the waters opened up and Dol of Siam emerged sitting atop a lotus flower.

Kasundo: Mary-Kol Whip

Without the Sun's warmth, Mary-Kol Whip's homelands had completely frosted over. She heard legends of a mystical flame that stood atop a desert mountain. Regardless of wind or rain, this flame could not be extinguished. Coveting a hero's glory, she ventured off to find the flame that might save her land. After climbing the mountain for days, she arrived at the summit and was met with a sudden warmth. She beamed with pride and sauntered over to the flame, when it suddenly engulfed her. But instead of pain, Mary-Kol felt heat coursing through her veins, gifting her the power of fire. This ability fueled her pride even further as she raced home, oblivious to the trail of flames consuming everything behind her. Like the spread of fire itself, her powers grew so quickly that when she entered her lands, the frost melted away in seconds. But she couldn't control her power and her home was eventually incinerated. Full of remorse, she sought out isolation in a desert cave. Inside was a lake of luminous blue water. Afraid of causing more destruction, she threw herself into the lake to extinguish the flames and end her suffering. Unbeknownst to her, the spirit in the lake sensed great repentance within her, and instilled balance in Mary-Kol through the power of water

Goddess of Reflection
Ziji:
Valak D'Mon

Valak was a mystical enchantress, feared throughout the mortal realm as an all-powerful demon. As a naga, she is a direct descendant of the Chinese snake goddess, Nüwa. Holding dominion over all bodies of water, and the creatures therein, Valak channeled her power and energy into the preservation of ocean life, calming storms for wayward sailors and the like. However, she was grossly misunderstood by the likes of men, and they prayed for her destruction. Desperately longing for human acceptance, she whittled her magic into a pearl that would form human legs from her snake body in order to walk amongst them. As time went on, she witnessed the true horrors of humanity - the cruelty of famine, the horrors of war, the hatred of men - and as she reflected upon herself, Valak realized she had trapped her true virtues within the pearl and sacrificed what made her good. She released her true image from the confines of the pearl and carries it now as a reminder of how much hides within a person, and that we must never stop to reflect upon who we really are.

SKIM

Skim spent their time on land as a travelling troubadour. They composed and shared their stories that they learned through their travels to anyone who would listen. But Skim grew weary of trying to find belonging in new places where they experienced shame, guilt and the weight of inequitable rules and structures of the world. Skim decided they no longer wanted to travel the land and burned all their belongings. This freed Skim from their weight so that they too could enter the flames. Skim absorbed the energies from the fire which allowed them to find peace and solace within themselves. They developed the ability to split their spirit into various faces with then allowed their creativity, knowledge and abilities to grow for eternity. Skim's faces now eternally emit a magenta flame constantly learning, listening and holding a warm vitality.
